Break-out Sessions
NBSC’s solid foundation of break-out sessions is the key benefit for all councils attending, as delegates have now experienced many new situations, yet can still leave a significant impact during their year. Delegates are placed in intimate groups and with the guidance of experienced moderators, discuss issues and ideas to better their councils.
Each session will be one hour and fifteen minutes, with the exception of the President’s session, JDC West session, and the CABS semi-annual general meeting. Session topics are outlined below
1. Council Sustainability
07/22/2010 at 01:47AMTurnover is inevitable when it comes to the workplace, and councils are no different. By the end of every year, each experience incredibly high turnover rates. Planning is essential in order to continue the success for future executives and councils after your year is over. In this session, delegates will discuss their best practices and problems they may have from seeking out new executive members, to transitioning new council members.
2. Council-Student Body Dynamics
07/22/2010 at 01:48AMSomething every council is bound to hear during the year is that their tight-knit, hard-working council is a “clique”. The rest of the student body finds the council to be a closed-off group to those not on council. Delegates will discuss how to ensure the student body has a positive view of the student council, giving guidance of how your council should be friendly and outgoing as possible to help eliminate the perceived council clique.
3. Council Public Relations
07/22/2010 at 01:48AMOne of the greatest ways to provide excellent value to the student body is to create strong, lasting relationships with the business community. These positive relationships formed by the student council provide students with many future career opportunities. Approaches for forming and continuing these long term relations will be discussed as well as dealing with school administration and public media outlets.
4. Internal Conflict Prevention and Resolution
07/22/2010 at 01:49AMNot immune from what faces every workplace, executives will have likely faced some internal conflict within their council. Delegates will share their experiences on how to take precautions to foresee these conflicts and how to use certain strategies to best deal with the situation when it happens.
5. InspiringYour Council
07/22/2010 at 01:49AMThe key to any organization’s success is the performance of their team, and performance hinges on the team’s motivation. Councils provide the unique situation in which financial compensation cannot be a form of motivation, thus allowing executives to search for creative ways to empower and motivate their peers for an entire school year. This break-out session will explore new ideas to motivate your council to new heights, allowing them to reach extraordinary success to their council!
6. Making You Council Relevant
07/22/2010 at 01:50AMNo matter what any council does, its goal is always to be relevant. This extends from the events it puts on, the services it provides, to how it represents its student population including the experience it gives its fellow council members. This session will explore how to be relevant to your students, council, community, corporate sponsors, and school.
7. Position-specific Sessions
07/22/2010 at 01:50AMUpon registration, delegates will choose one of the following sessions that is most relevant to their role.
